چکیده

Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT Theoretical predictions of Red Giant Branch stars' effective temperatures, colors, luminosities and surface chemical abundances are a necessary tool for the astrophysical interpretation of the visible–near infrared integrated light from unresolved stellar populations, the Color-Magnitude-Diagrams of resolved stellar clusters and galaxies, and spectroscopic determinations of red giant chemical abundances. On the other hand, the comparison with empirical constraints provides a stringent test for the accuracy of present generations of red giant models. We review the current status of red giant stars' modelling, discussing in detail the still existing uncertainties affecting the model input physics (e.g., electron conduction opacity, treatment of the superadiabatic convection), and the adequacy of the physical assumptions built into the model computations. We compare theory with several observational features of the Red Giant Branch in galactic globular clusters, such as the luminosity function 'bump', the luminosity of the Red Giant Branch tip and the envelope chemical abundance patterns, to show the level of agreement between current stellar models and empirical data concerning the stellar luminosities, star counts, and surface chemical abundances. Subject headings: atomic processes – convection – globular clusters: general – nuclear reactions, nucleosynthesis, abundances – stars: atmospheres – stars: evolution – stars: interiors – stars: Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) and CM diagrams – 3 –

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

Uncertainties in Red Giant Branch Evolution : The Red Giant Branch

A Monte Carlo simulation exploring uncertainties in standard stellar evolution theory on the red giant branch of metal-poor globular clusters has been conducted. Confidence limits are derived on the absolute V -band magnitude of the bump in the red giant branch luminosity function (MV,b) and the excess number of stars in the bump, Rb. The analysis takes into account uncertainties in the primord...

Why Hot Horizontal Branch Stars Can Appear Redder Than Red Giants ⋆

In this paper we report on a curious feature in the V , (U − B) color-magnitude diagrams of globular clusters. In our database, we find that a considerable fraction of blue horizontal branch stars, hotter than the instability strip and cooler than the Grundahl et al. (1999) jump (i.e., 6000 ≤ Teff(K)≤ 10000), have (U − B) colors redder than their red giant progenitors. This red incursion is not...

To appear in ApJL The distance to the Fornax dwarf galaxy using red clump stars, and the discrepancy between red clump and tip of the red giant branch distances

The distance to the Fornax dwarf galaxy using red clump stars, and the discrepancy between red clump and tip of the red giant branch distances ABSTRACT I determine a distance to the Fornax dwarf galaxy using stars in the red clump and at the tip of the red giant branch. They are in very good agreement, with µ 0 = 20.66 mag. Comparing the magnitudes of the tip of the red giant branch and of the ...
